Liverpool utility man James Milner has told the club’s website that the squad doesn’t want to be remembered as a flash in the pan.

The Reds are in Qatar preparing for the Club World Championships. Liverpool face Monterrey on Wednesday night in the semi-final; with either Flamengo or Al Hilal waiting in Saturday’s final.

With Jurgen Klopp’s men flying high at the top of the league, some people have suggested the game might come as a distraction.

Milner has played 22 games in all competitions for Liverpool and he doesn’t believe that to be the case

He told the club’s official website: “We want to continue our good form. If it’s a distraction with a chance to win a trophy, that’s a pretty good distraction to have.

“Since I have been at the club, it was important to get that first trophy on the board. That’s the hunger within the squad.

“I think you have heard many people in the squad talk about it; we don’t want to be remembered as the team who won one trophy, we want to be known as a group where you forget which year you won which trophy.

“It’s not easy with success, sometimes it is tough to replicate that once you’ve won a trophy. We haven’t done that yet.”

Liverpool are 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League and look to be heading towards their first title in many years.

Milner recently penned a new deal at the club and he has spent the last 18 months rolling back the years.

Versatile

Every title-winning team needs a player like Milner. He is a steady performer whenever trusted to play and boasts the relevant experience to aid the younger players.

Becoming the best team in world football is within their grasp. Beating Monterrey should be a formality and then a showdown with Flamengo is the likely situation.

Liverpool clearly have domination within their sights and they will hope to return to England with another trophy for the cabinet.
