Report: Liverpool insiders are starting to concede a huge summer mistake has cost them this season

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Liverpool sold Sadio Mane during this summer’s transfer window.

The Senegalese star was sold to Bayern Munich and he has since made an electric start to life in the German game with the current champions. By contrast, Liverpool have had a bit of a nightmare start and that was compounded by the 4-1 hammering at the hands of Napoli in midweek.

And according to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, there is a realisation within the Liverpool camp that the decision to sell Mane is backfiring in that they haven’t replaced him properly. Despite the January signing of Luis Diaz, a number of injuries have left Liverpool short all over the pitch.

Writing in his Reading the Game column, Delaney points out how those inside Anfield think Mane had developed into a genuine world-class player and with that, the club just haven’t replaced him properly. That, despite the addition of Diaz and the summer recruitment of young star Fabio Carvalho.

The Reds have been under the microscope all week. Their loss at Napoli only increased scrutiny, with Jurgen Klopp even admitting himself that the performance in Naples had surprised him.

TBR’s View: Liverpool Need To Act In January

Liverpool’s recruitment has been rightly praised in recent times but it does feel like they’ve missed a bit of a trick here.

Sure, they added Darwin Nunez this summer but he was never going to replace Mane, both in stature and style. The Uruguayan will probably be a good player for Liverpool but he is no Mane, as things stand.

For Liverpool and Klopp, it feels like January could be a key month. As we know, it’s a tricky month to get good players and value for money but it does seem like they need some fresher blood.
