Liverpool were linked with Ajax’s Antony earlier this summer.

But since signing Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho, speculation linking Antony to the Reds subsided.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano claimed a few weeks ago that Liverpool had dropped their interest in the Brazilian.

“Liverpool have thought about him,” he told Wett Freunde. “He was a player on their roster for a long time.

“Of course, that won’t happen this summer. They are happy with Darwin and Fabio Carvalho.”

It looked like that was the end of it, but now Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola has linked the two parties together again.

Nicola, speaking on Yahoo – via Sport Witness – claimed Manchester United are ‘not alone’ in the race for Antony.

It’s said Liverpool have ‘been keeping negotiations’ with Ajax and with Antony’s agent Junior Pedroso.

Indeed, the Reds have been coming ‘strong’ for the player.

Nicola claimed ‘it’s very possible’ that in July, ‘this auction ends positively for a transfer’.

However, he didn’t make it very clear whether Liverpool are favourites for the signing now.

Ajax reportedly want €80m (£67.8m) for Antony.

But the ‘tendency’ is that he moves for between €65m to €70m (£55m to £59.3m).

Speculation linking Antony to Liverpool seems a tad surprising now.

The Reds have signed Nunez and Carvalho, while Mohamed Salah has penned a new deal.

However, Roberto Firmino’s contract expires next year.

And Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have all left this summer

While Liverpool are well-stocked in attack and Antony’s price tag is high, you can’t ever rule anything out in football.

And there’s no doubt Antony would bolster the Anfield ranks, as he’s a world-class player.
