Liverpool fans react to performance of Harvey Elliott as UEFA Youth League dream dies

Liverpool were beaten 4-1 by Benfica in Portugal to end their hopes of UEFA Youth League glory for another season.

A relatively strong Reds outfit were blown away in the first 20 minutes of the contest as the hosts raced into a three-goal lead.

Some strong work by Harvey Elliott set up Tyler Morton to pull one back but another goal for the home side shortly after the break ended the Reds’ chances.

Liverpool huffed and puffed but they had little response to the home side, with Dantas proving particularly hard to manage.

The Reds also ended the game with nine men after Sepp van den Berg and Leighton Clarkson both saw red.

The performance did highlight some positives, however. Ki-Jana Hoever, Van den Berg and Morgan Boyes all got some minutes into the legs.

Of course, there was Elliott too, who at times showed the skillset which has earned him first-team opportunities this season.

Some supporters were disappointed not to see the 16-year-0ld in the squad to face Chelsea in the FA Cup tonight.

He played in the last round against Shrewsbury and was largely impressive with many fancying him for another crack tonight.

Elliott could cost Liverpool £7 million when his transfer from Fulham is put to a tribunal and he’s very much viewed as a star of the future.

Here is a selection of tweets regarding Elliott despite a defeat for Liverpool under-19s against Benfica.
