Liverpool handed untimely blow ahead of PNE clash, Klopp will be gutted - TBR View

Liverpool have been left reeling by James Milner’s injury layoff, with the Reds veteran expected to be out until after the international break.

The 36-year-old featured for just 26 minutes in Sunday’s Premier League hammering of Manchester United, with Curtis Jones taking his place.

Milner hurt his hamstring turning for a misplaced Andrew Robertson pass.

On Tuesday, Pep Lijnders revealed that he aggravated the problem by chasing after a Red Devils player making a run.

“Millie felt something, he felt something wasn’t right in his hamstring, a little bit tight,” said Lijnders.

“Then [Mason] Greenwood made this run and he decides, ‘I need to catch him’ – how Millie is, putting the team always first. And that created a bigger injury in that moment, that run.

“It shows a lot about his character and his will power to put the team first.

“This [injury] will be until the international break for sure, so it’s a long one. But we will need him in the coming period.”

This untimely blow is sure to leave Jurgen Klopp gutted, given the problems he has in midfield.

Naby Keita also came off against United and is unlikely to be risked, while Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott out alongside Milner.

That leaves three senior centre-mids in Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

On a more positive note, it shouldn’t be long before several of Klopp’s midfielders will soon be back in action.

And against Preston, Liverpool are likely to bring in some of the academy’s top players, so they’ll be able to show what they can do.

Nonetheless, Lijnders claiming Milner has a “long” layoff is nonetheless sad, given how much he gives on and off the pitch.
