Liverpool: Gerrard signs; Klopp clears up Sakho's future; extraordinary meeting called
Steven Gerrard is set to return to the club and sign a deal which will see him join the club’s academy to work as a coach bringing through the next generation of talented youngsters, claim the Mirror, having been present at the past two games at Anfield.
The news follows the announcement that under 23s manager Michael Beale is set to leave the club to go and take up a role with Rogerio Ceni at Sao Paulo as assistant manager in Brazil. This is likely to mean that Gerrard may step into that role or other coaches may move up an age group with Gerrard filling in for a younger age group.
Jurgen Klopp was asked on Friday whether or not Mamadou Sakho had any chance of making a return to the first team picture with the January transfer window nearing, to which he said:
“Of course he is not involved in this (first team squad). You should have known it before that he is not involved in this sentence. Now you know, I said it: he is not in these plans for the first team. The first team squad is here (at the training ground). You know all this. Do you really think I would have said Sakho will not be sold in Winter? You don’t have to check, you knew it before. Now you can use it as you want.”
Sakho reportedly turned down offers from West Brom, Stoke and Nice before the deadline closed in the summer but is now expected to depart in January.
Klopp has also been busy as the Mirror report that he has called a meeting of all of the club’s scouts over a meal at Melwood on Thursday as he plans for the January and summer transfer windows, wishing to make it clear what his priorities are.
Until then, and in spite of any additions, Klopp is believed to be keen to retain the faith in youngsters such as Ben Woodburn, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and more, who have come through the clubs ranks and are now pushing on the fringes of the first team.
