Liverpool gem who starred in the U-21s should make his senior debut v Southampton

Liverpool’s focus on youth development has become a hot topic of discussion on Merseyside this season.

Curtis Jones remains the only Scouser in the first-team squad who broke through the academy after Trent Alexander-Arnold departed for Real Madrid this summer.

While the 24-year-old has been granted a limited role thus far, Jones produced a series of impressive displays last season and has been a fully established member of the first-team set-up since 17.

Furthermore, Stefan Bajcetic is set to be involved this year after the Reds made the decision to retain the youngster who caught the eye with his performances on loan at Las Palmas.

And now Arne Slot has the opportunity to grant another senior debut to a Liverpool youngster who has proven influential, perhaps too much so, for Rob Page’s Under-21s.

Michael Laffey should be given his senior Liverpool debut

Michael Laffey has hit the ground running for the Under-21s in the Premier League 2 with two goals and one assist in his first four appearances.

His most recent goal came in the 2-1 loss against Manchester United on Sunday, where he dazzled alongside Liverpool summer signing Armin Pecsi and the impressive Trent Kone-Doherty.

The 19-year-old was a mainstay in the Under-21s last season, but has already surpassed his goal contribution output this year after recording only two assists in 19 outings – he has clearly taken a significant step forward in his development.

With Slot outright confirming that first-team regulars Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch will not feature in the Carabao Cup, it represents the perfect opportunity to hand opportunities to deserving youngsters.

Rio Ngumoha has already proven that age is no concern when representing the first team, with the youngster having already broken several long-standing records for the Reds this season.

Therefore, with Laffey impressing among a side that boasts only one win and four losses in the opening five matches, he undoubtedly deserves the opportunity against Southampton to see if he can follow in Ngumoha’s footsteps.

Michael Laffey could line up alongside Trey Nyoni

Trey Nyoni, the other academy graduate alongside Ngumoha, who Slot promoted this summer, could also make his first start of the season on Tuesday.

Jamie Carragher dubbed the midfielder “special“, and clearly, the sentiment is shared among the first team staff as Nyoni has enjoyed consistent involvement with the senior squad since arriving at the AXA Training Centre from Leicester City in 2023.

Laffey played alongside Nyoni nine times for the Under-21s last season, and having a familiar face alongside him in the midfield against Southampton would certainly help the youngster feel at ease on his potential debut.

Whether Slot makes the decision to include Laffey remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: no other player in the current Under-21s set-up deserves a first-team opportunity more than the Scouser.
