Liverpool: French forward targeted; Karius and co. to start; 16-year-old scouted
The Reds have proven to be a dominant attacking force in the opening weeks of the season, notching 16 goals in six games in all competitions to date, but Jurgen Klopp is not stopping there according to the Express, who claim that he is targeting the signing of French striker Gregoire Defrel to add competition alongside Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge. The Sassuolo forward has been in inspired form so far this season and the reports claim that Klopp is considering a January move for the man who has spent all of his career in Serie A so far in his career.
The move would seemingly make little sense, with the likes of Origi and Danny Ings already struggling to get game time with Roberto Firmino on fire playing as the central striker, with Daniel Sturridge also performing well in the past two games against Leicester and Chelsea. Unless Origi or Ings are to depart, the move would make next to no sense for the club, to spend money on another player to sit on the bench and grow unhappy at the lack of game time.
On the topic of players struggling for game time, Danny Ings could be one of those to feature in EFL Cup tie action against Derby County tonight, alongside German goalkeeper Loris Karius, who is set to make his competitive debut for the club in place of Simon Mignolet. Signed this summer, Karius was expected to start the season as number one but suffered a broken hand which saw him miss much of pre-season and he has only just returned to fitness, sitting on the bench for the past two games.
Now, Karius is set to prove his abilities up against Championship opposition tonight as he bids to replace Mignolet in goal, with the Belgian not having kept a clean sheet in the Premier League to date, conceding eight goals in five games. Klopp has made it clear that the number one shirt, like all other positions, is up for grabs, and having signed Karius himself, the former Manchester City stopper is likely to be the favourite to dispossess his counterpart of the jersey.
The Reds are also believed to be monitoring Fulham full-back Ryan Sessegnon, the 16-year-old sensation who is taking the Championship by storm having established himself at right back at Craven Cottage in the opening weeks of the season. Being tracked by most of the country’s biggest clubs already, the Mirror claim that the club are sending scouts to watch the England youth international every week.
If true, it would show that Liverpool are continuing with their policy of looking to sign the best young English talent around, as has proven successful in the past in cases like Raheem Sterling, sold on to Manchester City for a £40 million profit having been signed as a youngster from QPR. Sessegnon is certainly showing signs that he could be a top player in the future, and possibly a long term alternative to Nathaniel Clyne for club and country.
