Liverpool fans wowed by Wales star against Italy, despite defeat

Wales qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2020 despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Italy at the Stadio Olimpico. Going down to 10 men, Rob Page’s side did expertly well to keep the Italians to just one goal – with goal difference keeping them above Switzerland. Liverpool fans praised Neco Williams.

With Switzerland beating Turkey 3-1, Wales had to keep the score at a minimum against Italy in order to finish second. They did just that, despite a red card shown to Ethan Ampadu – one that John Hartson thought was harsh. The Welsh finished second on four points behind the Italians.

Williams, 20, was handed his first start by Page as the Wales gaffer decided to rest Tottenham left-back Ben Davies. The Spurs ace was also on a yellow card. Williams lasted 86 minutes and while he came up against a fierce opponent in the form of Juventus ace Federico Chiesa, he performed well.

What are Liverpool fans saying about Williams?

Wales Online handed Williams a steady 6/10 for his display – the same as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. They described his performance as a “testing experience” but applauded the £25,000-a-week star (Spotrac) for digging deep. Joe Rodon was the best of the bunch, with an 8/10.

Similarly, Liverpool fans were very complimentary on Twitter over the defender’s display – especially because he played as a left-back, despite being naturally right-footed. While most acknowledged it was in testing conditions, many praised their academy star.
