Watford captain Troy Deeney has told BBC Sport that he believes the Premier League campaign needs to be completed because it is the fairest solution, which will delight Liverpool supporters who are within an inch of landing the title.

The Covid-19 outbreak has seen the Premier League suspended until April 30 – an announcement which was made earlier this week. The general consensus, though, is that the remaining fixtures will not be played until the summer.

Deeney, 31, scored and produced an assist in Watford’s stunning 3-0 win over Liverpool in February and such a result has seen Liverpool have to wait slightly later to get their hands on the Premier League trophy. Watford are also in a relegation battle.

Asked what the best solution is, Deeney joined many in stating that the fairest outcome is to eventually finish the 2019-20 campaign – whenever it is possible. He feels everyone wants to see Liverpool go on and win the Premier League title.

“I don’t know when or how, but we’ve got to finish it, just to get a fair outcome,” Deeney said. “If you null and void it, Liverpool are wounded aren’t they. Everyone wants to see them win it now, they’ve been great.

“If you’re an Arsenal fan you want to go and see Arsenal play. Behind closed doors is not the same emotion or the same feel. It’s just a case of finishing it, but finishing it in a sensible way.”

TBR’s view – Deeney bang on, but waiting could have big impact

Sport is a huge, global economy that provides jobs for so many people in so many different areas. Commentators, pundits, writers and more have been affected by the lack of football. But it’s return cannot be rushed.

The Premier League, Football League and other authorities’ aim is to get football back soon. But they must come up with a deadline where it should be considered that if the wait is going on too long, then behind closed doors is the next step.
