Liverpool fans want Leicester star back, after another sparkling Euro 2020 display this week
Wales produced a stunning performance to beat Turkey at Euro 2020 on Wednesday evening – as they won 2-0. Gareth Bale stole the show – while he missed a penalty, he created both goals as Wales more or less secured their place in the last 16. Liverpool fans discussed the display of Danny Ward.
It was Bale that caught the headlines. His beautiful pass into Aaron Ramsey saw the Juventus midfielder open the scoring with a lovely chest down and finish past Ugurcan Cakir. Wales then produced a brilliant defensive performance to keep out the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu and Merih Demiral.
Indeed, Ward was on fire. Having starred between the sticks against Switzerland during a 1-1 draw in the opener – Leicester City goalkeeper Ward was on hand to secure a clean sheet. His best moment came late on in the match, when Ramsey’s teammate Demiral powered a header to goal.
The bullet header was destined for the net, only for Ward to react instinctively. Not only did he get his hands to it, but he pushed it away to a safe distance. The ex-Liverpool stopper was on fire, and while Bale gets the plaudits – creating the second for Connor Roberts – Ward deserves praise.
Could Euro 2020 be a stage for Leicester star Ward?
Coming into the tournament, 27-year-old Ward played just five times for Leicester during the 2020-21 campaign. He has now spent three seasons with the Foxes since his £12.5million move from Liverpool (BBC), but managed only 14 outings for Leicester. He is firmly second choice.
Kasper Schmeichel remains the number one at Leicester and will continue to do so. But Euro 2020 might just be the stage in which Ward needs to finally secure a move to a club where he is considered first choice. Certainly, if any goalkeeper has impressed at the tournament, it is Ward.
Numerous Premier League clubs need a goalkeeper. Tottenham might want to replace Hugo Lloris, West Ham could do with a younger goalkeeper to take the place of Lukasz Fabianski, Arsenal might sell Bernd Leno. Further down, the likes of Brighton, Southampton and more might want a keeper.
But do Liverpool need a goalkeeper like Ward? Fans think so…
Ward joined Liverpool from Aberdeen in January 2016 and while he only played three times for the Reds – he left an impression on fans. Clearly, that impression has lasted three years after leaving Anfield. Many watched on as Ward kept a clean sheet in a shock win over Turkey.
Despite 30,000 of the 31,000 fans in the stadium in Baku, Wales kept Turkey at bay and Ward was crucial to that. Liverpool have just handed Adrian a new deal but his time at Liverpool has been marred with errors and mistakes. Reds fans feel the club could do with another goalkeeper.
Many watched Ward shine with Wales and believe that if Liverpool are to go after another goalkeeper – they could do a lot worse than bringing Ward back to Merseyside from Leiceser.
