Liverpool are currently preparing to face Atletico Madrid in a huge Champions League showdown on Wednesday night – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have insisted that James Milner should be included in the starting XI.
The Reds welcome the Spanish club to Anfield for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, with the La Liga team boasting a 1-0 advantage on aggregate.
Jurgen Klopp’s team have plenty of work to do after a narrow defeat in the first leg out in Spain, but have proven in recent years how formidable they are at Anfield.
The Merseyside giants have hit their worst form of the season recently with three defeats in their last five games across all competitions, but they did beat Bournemouth at the weekend to put them on the cusp of the Premier League title.
But they will need to try outwit a stubborn Atletico if they want a chance of defending their Champion League crown this season.
A selection of Liverpool supporters on social media believe that Milner should retain his spot in the team in midweek and want to see him as part of a midfield set up.
The 34-year-old has not been a regular in Klopp’s XI this campaign, but did start in the weekend in the win over Bournemouth and the midfielder showed his versatility by slotting in at left-back.
Andy Robertson was rested for the league fixture and will be back for the Champions League, while captain Jordan Henderson could be back from a hamstring injury too (official website).
Milner’s appearance against Bournemouth was only his second start of the campaign, but does have plenty of big game experience and is one potential option for the midfield against Atletico.
Here are some Reds fans on Milner:
I’d have Milner to start over Fabinho

I would start Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum as the midfield against Atlético Madrid.

Milner should start vs Atletico

James Milner has to start, and be in midfield. Really lacked a voice, and head, in midfield over the last few weeks.

Without the Bournemouth game at the weekend I’d of agreed but Milner deserves to start after that performance, Hendo in the 6 with Milner and wijnaldum.
