Liverpool fans want Euro 2020 star with four goals signed this summer
The list of possible replacements for Gini Wijnaldum is somewhat endless. A new name gets mentioned week in, week out. But the fact remains, Liverpool need to replace the Dutch superstar, who has joined PSG. Now, Liverpool fans have identified the man they want, in Emil Forsberg.
Forsberg, 29, has been in sensational form at the European Championships. While Sweden were eventually knocked out by Ukraine on Tuesday night, after a 121st-minute winner – Forsberg still managed to find the net. It was his fourth goal of the tournament, though it did go in via a deflection.
Sweden’s number 10 could have had a hat-trick. With the scoreline reading 1-1, the RB Leipzig star hit the post with a curling effort. Then, he cut inside on his right and from the best part of 25 yards, his effort crashed against the cross bar. But clearly, he is an enormous talent with huge quality.
The 62-time Sweden international has been Sweden’s main man. While plenty of plaudits are going into way of Alexander Isak given Arsenal and Liverpool are being linked, Forsberg has been Sweden’s best player. The Mirror claimed in 2017 that Forsberg was a £20million target for Liverpool.
Is Forsberg the man to bring to Liverpool?
So, Liverpool need a midfielder. The void Wijnaldum leaves is one of a goalscoring midfielder who can net at crucial times. One that has enormous work rate and provides a crucial cog in the engine room but when on the ball, boasts attacking quality. Forsberg is the ideal addition for Liverpool.
At least that is, on the pitch. But off it, is he the man for the Reds? In October, Forsberg will turn 30. He perhaps lacks the speed needed to play in a Jurgen Klopp side. But Forsberg is versatile, much more so than Wijnaldum. He can play on either flank, in midfield or as a 10.
Now, Forsberg has a contract at Leipzig until the summer of 2025. So, if Liverpool do reignite interest from 2017 and pursue a move – then he could cost a pretty penny, even if he is almost 30. TransferMarkt say he shares the same agent as Leipzig teammate and ex-Liverpool man Peter Gulacsi.
What have Liverpool fans said about Forsberg on Twitter?
Regardless of age and potential transfer fee, Liverpool fans think Forsberg would be a brilliant signing. On Tuesday night, he looked like a man that had the ability to change the game – as did Oleksandr Zinchenko for Ukraine. He was excellent for Sweden, his technical ability second to none.
Liverpool fans sent messages to their club over Forsberg, urging the playmaker to be a target for the Merseyside outfit. One fan claimed he is a “fitting replacement for Gini”, while another would love to see Forsberg “in a Liverpool shirt”.
