Liverpool fans want Dani Alves, after release
Dani Alves has become a free agent after being released by Brazilian club Sao Paulo – and Liverpool fans have urged their club to sign the right-back.
Alves, 38, is widely known as the most-decorated player in the history of football – last winning a gold medal at the Olympics with Brazil.
A 119-time Brazil international, Alves has three Champions League titles, six La Liga medals, a Serie A trophy and two Ligue 1 successes.
Now a free agent, he proved this summer – and over the last couple of seasons with Sao Paulo – that he still has plenty left in the tank.
Clocking up 95 appearances for Sao Paulo, he had a hand in 23 goals – scoring nine and creating 14. But now, he is a free agent.
Of course, one of the major European titles he does not boast is a Premier League medal. A move to England could be on his agenda.
Alves to Liverpool: Do Reds need Brazil veteran this season?
Probably not, but they do need cover on the right of defence as back-up to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Neco Williams has been indifferent in a red shirt.
Alexander-Arnold spent time on the sidelines last season due to injury. Jurgen Klopp learnt the importance of playing players in their positions.
With Jordan Henderson and Fabinho at centre-back, Liverpool struggled. So, playing players in the right positions is crucial to the Anfield club.
With Williams not the best option as cover, Alves would be ideal cover. His winning mentality and knowledge of the Champions League is ideal.
Of course, he would not be able to play every game. But Alves is talented enough to play in midfield, too. He is clearly fit enough, despite his age.
It remains to be seen if Alves will move to England, in his next career step. Indeed, there could be a chance that he chooses to hand up the boots.
Alves could be Wijnaldum replacement at Liverpool, too…
Wijnaldum left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer. Despite his exit, the club did not bring in a replacement.
In fact, the only signing Liverpool made was Ibrahima Konate. Harvey Elliott has now suffered a dislocated ankle; Liverpool are light in midfield.
So, there is a need for cover at right-back, but there is also the need for another body in the middle of the park, as Liverpool fight on four fronts.
It would go against Liverpool’s transfer strategy, but clearly, a one-year deal for Alves would be a brilliant signing for the Reds.
For numerous reasons, Liverpool should bring in Alves for the 21-22 season. Liverpool fans have urged the club to sign Alves on a free transfer.
