Liverpool fans want club to make approach for free agent Ezequiel Garay

It has been a difficult few days for Liverpool. Losing Trent Alexander-Arnold for a month to a calf injury was a blow for The Reds, but that has been worsened by Joe Gomez’s injury. Liverpool fans, though, think they have a solution.

Alexander-Arnold joined Virgil van Dijk in the treatment room, with the latter sidelined for what many believe to be the rest of the season. Fabinho is out with a hamstring knock – while Joel Matip has only just returned.

Now, Gomez has been forced to undergo surgery on his knee. Though successful, the operation is likely to keep him out for the majority of the season. Liverpool are down to the bare bones at centre-back.

Matip now becomes the club’s best first-team option that is fit, while Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are the club’s alternatives. Jordan Henderson could drop in – but Liverpool fans think a dip into the free agent market is needed.

Reports suggest Daryl Janmaat has been offered to the club following his Watford release – but Liverpool need to look elsewhere. The options are limited, but among the list of free agents, one man’s name stands out.

Argentine veteran Ezequiel Garay is without a club after being released by Spanish side Valencia. Now 34 years of age, the 32-time Argentina international is likely to be looking for one last European adventure.

A cruciate ligament rupture last season stifled and ultimately ruined his chances of earning a new Valencia deal – despite playing in the Champions League and clocking up 23 outings prior to the injury.

There is no doubt that Garay is still a very good option at centre-back. He is still a player that has over 350 club appearances for Benfica, Valencia, Real Madrid and Russians Zenit St. Petersburg – where Dejan Lovren is shining.

A ball-playing defender, Garay would fit right at home in a Liverpool side that prefer to keep possession and build from the back. No, he does not have the turn of pace he once did, but Liverpool can hardly afford to be picky.

One benefit that Liverpool may find in a potential pursuit of Garay would be his agent. TransferMarkt claim Garay is represented by agency Gestifute, a company that Liverpool dealt with during the summer window.

Indeed, the agency also acts a representatives for Diogo Jota – who joined the Reds from Wolves just a few months ago. Brazilian ace Fabinho is also represented by them, meaning Liverpool will be have a good relationship.

It might be harsh on Williams and Phillips. But Williams is just getting started and deep down, Phillips will know that his long-term future lies away from Liverpool – certainly, his contract at Anfield is due to expire next summer.

So, the free agent market might be the only way Liverpool remain on a level playing field with Manchester City. Offering a short-term deal to Garay would be a solid move – one that would certainly improve the options they have.

Many Liverpool fans are in agreement. Here are a handful urging the Reds to go after the Argentine veteran.
