Wednesday night’s Super Cup in Istanbul will have taken its toll on both Liverpool and Chelsea players after the sides played 120 minutes – and it has seen Liverpool fans urge Jurgen Klopp to bring in an out-of-favour defender.
The Reds face a quicker turnaround than Frank Lampard’s side, as they take on Southampton away from home on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Chelsea, meanwhile, have an extra day to recover when they host Leicester on Sunday.
Klopp made a somewhat surprising decision to rest Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Super Cup, placing him on the bench and instead starting Joe Gomez on the right side of defence and Joel Matip at centre-back.

Though Alexander-Arnold did come on as a substitute for Andy Robertson, Gomez, Matip and Virgil van Dijk all played 120 minutes as the Reds earned a penalty-shootout win to hold the UEFA Super Cup.
Dejan Lovren has been linked with AS Roma from Liverpool, but Goal claim a move has fallen through with the Reds of the belief that Roma are looking to play dirty with their negotiation tactics in order to unsettle Lovren.
Lovren has only managed five Premier League appearances in the calendar year of 2019, but Reds fans have called on Klopp to rest the likes of Matip and Gomez and start Lovren against his old side on Saturday afternoon.
