Liverpool fans think they know exactly why Spain thumped Croatia 6-0

Some Liverpool fans believe they know why Spain battered Croatia 6-0 in the Nations League on Tuesday.

Luis Enrique’s side tore apart the World Cup finalists, with goals coming from six different sources including an own goal by Lovre Kalinic.

The game, contested in the southeastern Spanish city of Elche, was only Enrique’s second match in charge.

The ex-Barcelona coach replaced Fernando Hierro, who oversaw Spain’s World Cup bid after the Spanish FA sacked Julen Lopetegui a day before the finals in Russia.

It was certainly a shock result, with Croatia having fielded a fairly strong side.

The likes of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic, Domagoj Vida, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic all featured for the away team, who were recently bumped up to fourth in the FIFA World Rankings.

No Lovren, no party?

Although Spain have fared poorly on the big stage in recent years, they still obviously have some incredible players.

On Tuesday night those players just clicked and Croatia took a beating – their biggest in their history.

It was a surprise result, and some Liverpool supporters have put it down to the absence of their centre-back Dejan Lovren.

Lovren is currently on the sidelines nursing a pelvis problem, which he sustained at the World Cup.

The ex-Southampton defender hasn’t appeared for the Reds yet this season as he continues his recovery.

Lovren was fantastic alongside Vida at the World Cup, and earned his place in the official team of the tournament.

Following that, he branded himself ‘one of the best defenders in the world’.

Reaction

Some Liverpool fans believe Lovren’s absence in the side played a huge part in Croatia’s humiliation, and some took to social media to voice (some ironically, some deadly serious) their opinions:
