Liverpool fans rejoice as Joel Matip pens new deal at Anfield

Liverpool fans have expressed their elation on social media after defender Joel Matip signed a new deal at Anfield.

The centre-half has been rewarded with a deal described as ‘long-term’ by the club for his magnificent form over the past year or so.

Matip said, as quoted by the club’s official website: “It’s a great feeling to be a longer part of the club. It’s really just a great feeling.

“From outside, you know Liverpool is such a big club – but when you are inside, then you really get a feeling for how big the club is. In all the countries, the supporters are everywhere. It’s a massive and big club that I think every player would want to play for.”

Matip has become a huge fans’ favourite at Liverpool after coming into the starting XI as a regular around this time last year.

The Cameroonian replaced Joe Gomez after the England international suffered a leg break against Burnley.

So good were his performances, that Matip kept his place alongside Virgil van Dijk after Gomez had recovered and was key in the Reds winning their sixth European title earlier this year.

Matip’s great form has continued into 2019/20, and the news of his extension has delighted the masses.
