Liverpool fans react to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip missing Genk trip

The defensive duo will not feature on the Champions League away day.

Liverpool will be without defensive duo Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold for the trip to face Genk in the Champions League tomorrow night, as per their official website.

The pair both played on Sunday as the Reds’ Premier League winning run came to an end but will sit it out as they go in search of improving their European group stage record on the road.

Jurgen Klopp said: “Trent is ill and Joel is not ready. It is just a little thing which usually settles in the two weeks [Matip] had; it did, but then it came up after the United game and so now we just have to make sure this time it settles finally, that’s all.

“It is not a massive injury, it’s just a bit annoying for him and he cannot do it [face Genk]. Trent got ill overnight; hopefully he can recover quickly, but for tomorrow there was no chance.”

Mo Salah is back for the Reds, having sat out the match at Old Trafford, but many supporters were concerned when the club tweeted out the news that the defensive pair would not play on their official account.

They could do with a win on the road to make up for the reverse against Napoli in the first round of matches and should have enough to get the job done against weaker opponents.

But it would be easier with two of their first choice defenders available, even if their absence means they should be fresh for the weekend meeting with Tottenham.
