Roberto Firmino played an instrumental role as Liverpool lifted the UEFA Super Cup. Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to win the Super Cup as Firmino provided two assists in Istanbul.

Jurgen Klopp started with Firmino on the bench, opting to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in an advanced role instead. At half-time, with this system not working and Liverpool 1-0 down, Klopp changed it and put Firmino on.

The Brazilian took less than three minutes to make his mark. He connected with a floated ball over the top, poking it away from Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the path of Sadio Mane, who scrappily finished it off.

In extra time, Firmino and Mane once again combined to put Liverpool ahead for the first time. Firmino went down the left channel and cut it back for Mane, who finished superbly into the top corner.

Jorginho’s penalty then took the game to a shoot-out and Firmino kept his cool from the spot. Liverpool won 5-4 with Adrian saving Tammy Abraham’s tame penalty at the end. Liverpool fans praised Firmino for turning the game on its head and they highlighted how important his role is. Here are some of the best tweets about that.
