Liverpool took a giant step towards the knockout stages of the Champions League with a third successive win in the competition.

The Reds defeated Atletico Madrid 3-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano with a brace coming from Mohamed Salah and another from Naby Keita.

Salah’s first goal came via a deflection, with James Milner believing he might have got the decisive touch to deflect it away from Jan Oblak.

Nonetheless, the experienced performer’s showing caught the eye and he rolled back the years in Madrid.

Milner was handed the chance to start with Fabinho, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones all struggling for fitness.

Fabinho did start this game on the bench, so Milner’s performance was timely for Liverpool.

Liverpool have won all three of their Group B games so far. They sit five points clear of Atletico Madrid in second and are closing in on qualification.

This was an impressive Liverpool performance. They raced into a two-goal lead inside 16 minutes, through Salah and Keita.

Antoine Griezmann scored twice to get Los Rojiblancos level but he was then sent off for kicking Roberto Firmino in the face.

Liverpool were then awarded a spot-kick and Salah duly obliged; firing beyond Oblak.
