Liverpool fans react to news club are tracking Maximilian Wöber as potential transfer target

Liverpool are being linked with a potential move for Austria and Red Bull Salzburg defender Maximilian Wöber.

That is according to a number of reports this week highlighting the Reds’ potential hunt for a new defensive option in January.

Eurosport has suggested that Wöber is ‘among the potential options’ Liverpool could pursue this month to help strengthen at the back.

That report has now been backed up by Austrian paper Der Standard. Peter Linden Live, another Austrian source, has also commented on potential interest in Wober from Liverpool, although suggested that Salzburg would not be willing to let him leave this January.

Wöber would join fellow former Salzburg players Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, and Takumi Minamino at Anfield.

Wöber would also come cheap. A report from Foot Mercato in April suggested Salzburg had valued him at just £13.3 million when Lyon were snooping around a potential deal.

This news carries extra weight considering The Athletic’s confirmation yesterday that Liverpool have no interest in Sven Botman of Lille this month.

Liverpool are short at centre-back after a number of serious injuries to senior players. Jurgen Klopp has been trusting the youngsters but Wober, a former Ajax and Sevilla defender, is seemingly one option Liverpool have in mind should they decide a new recruit is needed.

Reaction to the news has been mixed. Whilst some Liverpool fans appreciate Wöber’s talents, and the fact he is likely to come at a decent fee, others doubt he is of the calibre needed to improve the club’s current options.
