Liverpool fans react to Jordan Henderson’s performance against Red Bull Salzburg

Liverpool escaped a huge scare against Red Bull Salzburg in the second match of the Champions League group stage last night.

The Reds came away 4-3 winners, but contrived to throw away a 3-0 half time lead within just 15 second half minutes before Mo Salah eventually won the match.

It was a return to the leaky defensive days of Jurgen Klopp’s early days, when Liverpool were a side capable of scoring at will against almost any opponent but also liable to ship too many goals too.

A rusty Joe Gomez and a slightly off-colour Virgil van Dijk did not cover themselves in glory, but many Reds supporters were keen to point out the below-par performance of captain Jordan Henderson.

Many supporters felt that the £140,000-a-week (Spotrac) skipper was a major factor in Liverpool failing to control the second half and that the situation only improved when he was replaced.

In truth, Henderson has become a fairly predictable scapegoat on underwhelming Liverpool nights – which are few and far between these days – and he did some good work in the build up to Andy Robertson’s goal, the second of the night.

The former Sunderland man likely deserves a bit more respect and faith from the fanbase a matter of months after he lifted the Champions League above his head in Madrid, but it wasn’t especially forthcoming last night…
