A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Joel Matip after the defender’s display against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds and Pep Guardiola’s men played out a classic at Anfield, with a pulsating game ending 2-2.

Unfortunately for Matip, it was his deflection that took Kevin De Bruyne’s attempt past Alisson for City’s equaliser with nine minutes remaining.

It was a particularly cruel moment as, up until that moment, Matip had been outstanding. For many Liverpool fans, he was their best defender on the day.

The 30-year-old has made a superb start to the campaign. He is becoming known for his bursts out of defence that quite often end with the centre-back in the final third of the pitch.

And he was once again able to drive Liverpool up the pitch on Sunday.

Only Virgil Van Dijk completed more passes than Matip, who found a teammate 81 times during the contest (Whoscored).

Meanwhile, he won three challenges. Again, one teammate bettered that tally, with Mohamed Salah winning four.

But he did make more interceptions than any other player, winning four during the contest.

Understandably, Salah is receiving the plaudits from most. The Egyptian scored another stunning goal for the home side on a day when Liverpool paid a superb tribute to one of their greatest.

But Matip has been lauded for his contribution to the performance. Some have insisted that he has been their best defender all season.
