Liverpool fans react to Joel Matip display in Leeds win

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Joel Matip after the Reds beat Leeds United 3-0 on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were one goal away from going to the summit of the Premier League table as they cruised to victory at Elland Road.

Of course, the game was overshadowed by the horrific injury suffered by Harvey Elliott. But the Reds can still reflect on an outstanding performance.

And perhaps no player was more impressive than Matip. He played a key role in the opening goal, driving forward before Mohamed Salah was able to tap home.

And he remained a class act throughout the contest. No player completed a greater number of successful passes than the 30-year-old (Whoscored).

There was another statistic from the game that may also delight Reds fans.

Paolo Maldini famously said that he only ever needed to make a tackle if he had already made a mistake.

Matip did not complete a single successful tackle during the game – only because he did not attempt one. So that tells its own story.

Matip has been sensational in the opening weeks of the season. His partnership with Virgil Van Dijk is looking frightening at times.

For many Liverpool fans, the pair are two of the very best centre-backs in the world. And some have insisted that the time has come for Matip – who earns £100,000-a-week at Anfield – to receive the credit he deserves.
