Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Gini Wijnaldum’s comments

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react to comments from Georginio Wijnaldum concerning his future – which have been reported on the club’s official website.

Wijnaldum’s future on Merseyside has been up in the air for some time. As noted by the club’s website, his contract at Anfield expires at the end of the campaign.

It certainly seems ominous that his deal has reached the stage where he could potentially agree terms with an overseas club.

Ahead of the Reds’ Champions League tie with RB Leipzig, Wijnaldum confirmed that there is no update on his future. And he was subsequently asked about how hard it would be to leave in the summer.

“Really difficult because if that happens you will leave a team who you really love, a team who you shared a lot of years together, and where you feel really comfortable,” he told the club’s official website. “That would be difficult… it always depends on the situation but that I would be devastated that I don’t play with this team anymore, that would be for sure.”

Unsurprisingly, the comments have prompted a strong reaction amongst Liverpool fans on social media.

Wijnaldum has been an outstanding signing for Jurgen Klopp’s side. And some are incredibly fearful about how difficult it could be to replace him.

Several have also implored the club to offer him whatever it takes to get him to sign a deal. Some have suggested that Wijnaldum’s comments hint that he would be delighted to stay if the terms were right.

He is on £75,000-a-week, according to Spotrac. And plenty of fans feel that the club should be willing to offer the kind of pay increase that would take him much closer to the higher earners amongst the squad.
