Russian manager Leonid Slutsky has claimed that Liverpool failed in an attempt to sign Martin Odegaard in the summer of 2019 before he joined Real Sociedad – and Liverpool supporters have reacted on Twitter.
Odegaard, 21, had struggled following his move to Real Madrid as a teenager. Just two senior appearances saw him go out on loan to Vitesse, where his career finally got back on track – scoring 11 and creating 12 from midfield.
A 22-time Norway international, Odegaard joined La Liga side Sociedad last summer on loan until the end of 2020-21 season. Real Madrid do have the option to recall Odegaard this summer – halfway through his loan spell.
Madrid may want to. That is because Odegaard has had a hand in 15 goals during his 28 Sociedad appearances and with Luka Modric potentially leaving, Odegaard could replace him. But it could have been so different, claims former Vitesse boss Slutsky.

“His time at Vitesse has been very important,” Slutsky told Voetbal International. “He became one of the best players in the Eredivisie and had many offers in his pocket. Not only from Real Sociedad, but also from Liverpool and Ajax.”
Odegaard’s stunning form has seen his early potential return and despite the global health crisis, this summer promises to be an intriguing one for the playmaker. AS claim he is worth a whopping £43million.
Liverpool supporters have reacted on Twitter to the news that The Reds tried to sign Odegaard last summer, and many fans are wishing their club had secured a deal for the Real Madrid ace.
