Liverpool fans react as Joe Gomez is booed in substitute appearance for England

Raheem Sterling has defended the Reds ace on Twitter.

Joe Gomez took to the pitch for the first time since the incident that saw Raheem Sterling dropped by England last night in the 7-0 victory over Montenegro.

Sterling was in the stands as the £28,000-a-week (Spotrac) Liverpool man was introduced as a substitute at Wembley, where he was greeted by baffling boos from some supporters.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate told the BBC: “I am hugely disappointed for Joe. Joe had done nothing wrong and no England player should be booed like that when they are wearing the shirt. All the players are particularly disappointed with that.”

And Sterling himself felt compelled to take to Twitter to defend his team-mate, rightly so given that the young defender has found himself in the eye of the storm for no reason.

Liverpool supporters on Twitter passionately backed their man after a difficult night on international duty, supporting him to the hilt and showering him in the love he didn’t get from every England fan last night.

The whole saga needs putting to bed now and it can only be hoped that the braindead England fans who booed one of their own players for no reason don’t repeat the trick in future internationals.
