Liverpool fans react as Fabrizio Romano says Reds have been offered Ezequiel Garay

Fabrizio Romano has claimed in his Here We Go podcast that Liverpool were offered the chance to sign free agent Ezequiel Garay to ease their centre-back crisis – and Reds fans have responded on Twitter, after Liverpool turned down that chance.

Garay, 34, is on the lookout for a new club after he was released by La Liga side Valencia in the summer. Such a decision was made after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament problem – he had made 23 appearances earlier this season.

Liverpool have a crisis in defence. Failure to replace Dejan Lovren in the summer has been worsened by season-ending injuries to Joe Gomez and potentiall Virgil van Dijk. It leaves Jurgen Klopp with just Joel Matip as a recognised first-team option.

Fabinho has filled in on numerous occasions and is likely to be used as more of a central defender this term – rather than playing in his more natural midfield role. Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have come in on occasion, impressing when used.

But a new signing is likely, especially given we are five weeks away from the January window. However, the Reds had been offered the chance to make a signing before January – with Romano confirming as much, in the form of Garay.

“Garay was offered to Liverpool as a free agent but they said no. He’s not the type of player they want,” Romano said. “They are in no rush, they are looking at the window for opportunities. They are more interested in extending contracts.”

Liverpool supporters have reacted on Twitter to the news that Garay has been offered to Liverpool, but turned down by the Anfield club. Many feel avoiding Garay is the right decision, given his age and injury issues.
