Liverpool fans gutted at Monday announcement on 20-year-old maestro

Liverpool have been rocked with the news that Curtis Jones will miss tonight’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid.

The Reds return to the Wanda Metropolitano where they lifted the famous trophy during the 2018/19 campaign.

Jones wasn’t on board the flight which left Liverpool yesterday though and he misses out this evening.

Injuries have been a real problem for Jurgen Klopp during the last 12 months. Last season his squad was decimated, making for one of the worst ever Premier League title defences.

Prior to his latest injury, Jones had been getting some games. He played in draws against Brentford and Manchester City, registering a goal and an assist.

Now, he will be forced to watch on as another player stakes their claim for a place in the team.

Klopp is already missing Harvey Elliott and his midfield engine room is lacking some youthful exuberance.

Atletico Madrid will provide a stern test for Liverpool. Los Rojiblancos knocked the Reds out of the tournament during the 2019/20 campaign.

Jones has been steadily growing as a player in recent years. Since emerging through the academy ranks he’s made 53 appearances for the Reds, scoring eight goals.

The 20-year-old will bounce back but with competition for places rife, he won’t want to be on the treatment table for long.

What have Liverpool fans said about Jones?

Clearly, they’re upset that another player appears to be injured. It’s not ideal and comes at a time when the Reds have some massive fixtures on the horizon.

Interestingly, nothing was mentioned about Thiago in the pre-match press conference and some think he might be ready for a return.

That might be unlikely and whoever does take to the field this evening will try and make life tough for Atletico.

Supporters hope that Jones isn’t out for too long and they’ve been sending him well wishes on Twitter since yesterday’s announcement.
