Liverpool fans react as Curtis Jones is handed Steven Gerrard’s old number

Liverpool fans have reacted to the news that Curtis Jones will wear the number 17 shirt next season.

The midfielder will ditch is current 48 jersey in favour of the vacant 17 – which of course was once worn by club legend Steven Gerrard before making the number 8 iconic.

The shirt hasn’t been in use since Ragnar Klavan was at the club – the Estonian international left Anfield in the summer of 2018.

The change for Jones is the strongest hint yet that he will be involved with the first-team next season.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut last season against Wolves in the FA Cup, and his Premier League debut against Bournemouth earlier this season.

Arguably the highlight for Jones will have been scoring the winner against Everton in this season’s FA Cup – a magnificent curling strike into the top corner.

He later became the club’s youngster ever captain – donning the armband against Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round replay.
