Liverpool fans react as club reportedly eye the 'next Michael Ballack', after Euro 2020 heroics
Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Hoffenheim attacker Christoph Baumgartner this summer. The Austrian star impressed at this summer’s European Championships before they were knocked out by Italy. Liverpool fans have reacted, claiming Baumgartner would be a good signing.
Baumgartner, 21, clocked up 16 goal involvements in 41 games for Hoffenheim during 2020-21. Scoring nine, he created seven despite being used in several positions – mostly the 10 role. At Euro 2020, he scored a crucial goal that sent Austria into the knockout stages against Italy.
German magazine Kicker have claimed that both Liverpool and Manchester United are interested. Earlier reports have suggested that he could be available for just £16million, though that value might increase after Euro 2020. His style of play has seen him dubbed the ‘new Michael Ballack’.
What are Liverpool fans saying about Baumgartner?
Well first of all, Liverpool could do with a player like Baumgartner. Able to play out wide, as a 10, deeper in midfield or up front, he is incredibly versatile in the final third. Xherdan Shaqiri is similar but Liverpool are ready to let the Swiss ace go for just £13million this summer.
So, Baumgartner would be an ideal replacement – and for a little above the fee Liverpool want to sell Shaqiri for, they would be getting a player eight years younger. Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to the reports that their club want to sign Baumgartner – with many urging a move.
