‘Enough of this penny pinching’: Some Liverpool fans react to ‘unbelievable’ reported plan
Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media to reports by the Liverpool Echo, claiming Jurgen Klopp’s side are hopeful Adrian will agree to sign a new contract.
The Spanish shot-stopper will be a free agent at the end of the month with his terms set to expire. Adrian featured six times across all competitions last season, keeping three clean sheets.
Signing new terms would see the 34-year-old contend with Caoimhin Kelleher for the role of Allison’s understudy next season. Liverpool have no interest in loaning out the 22-year-old, who made his Republic of Ireland debut on Tuesday.
Kelleher is the current number two behind Allison at Anfield after an impressive run in Klopp’s plans from last December. His displays had attracted interest, with League One side Ipswich Town one of several clubs keen on a loan deal.
But Liverpool will reject all approaches and want to tie their academy graduate down with an improved contract. The former Ringmahon Rangers prospect is currently set to be out of contract next year.
Adrian is a more pressing matter for the Reds with his terms expiring at the end of the month. The Daily Mail recently claimed the Spaniard is ready to sign a new deal, despite interest from Real Betis.
Liverpool fans react to Adrian contract claim
But some Liverpool fans reacting on social media do not want to see Adrian retained. Instead, they have shared hopes of seeing the veteran shot-stopper depart as a free agent.
That’s because a few believe retaining Adrian is a sign of Liverpool having little ambition to compete in the transfer market. While others simply believe there are alternative options available to Klopp to add depth behind Allison.
