Liverpool suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season at the hands Manchester City – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter fumed with their defender Dejan Lovren for his performance.

Manchester City earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory and it means they climb to second in the table, which leaves them just four points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side saw their unbeaten league run come to an end at the Etihad Stadium, but remain in the driving seat in the enthralling title race.

Sergio Agüero once again inflicted misery on the Merseyside club, as he found space in the penalty area to fire into the roof of the net for an opener just before half-time.

Roberto Firmino levelled it up for the Reds in the second period with his header into an open net after a stunning move, but eventually Leroy Sane settled the game with his effort that was drilled in off the post in the 72nd minute.

A selection of Liverpool fans on social media were furious with how goalscorer Aguero found space in the penalty area at the front past where Lovren was meant to be filling space.

Lovren was given a tough night by the Argentinian centre-forward and had to walk on a tightrope with a yellow card in the first-half for a challenge on him.

The 29-year-old centre-back also played Raheem Sterling onside in the build up to the winning goal, as the Englishman assisted Sane’s strike.

Croatia international Lovren has looked solid alongside Virgil Van Dijk for large spells of the season, but crumbled in the pressure of a crunch fixture and they may have missed the injured Joe Gomez in the heart of defence.
