Liverpool suffered a poor 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday evening as Phil Foden produced a masterclass to down Jurgen Klopp’s side – and Reds fans have questioned a decision made by Jurgen Klopp in the second half.
The Reds came into the match in struggling form. A brief resurgence that came in the form of wins over West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur was ruined by a home defeat to Brighton last time out. It made Sunday’s clash a must-win game.
But City are red hot at the moment. They had won 13 consecutive matches in all competitions before Sunday’s match, and made it 14 despite missing a first-half penalty – and then being pegged back by Mo Salah from the penalty spot.
Salah’s spot-kick came after Ilkay Gundogan had scored the opener. Then, just before 70 minutes, Klopp decided to make a change – removing Thiago from the side who had performed well, offering stability and a defensive screen.
Curtis Jones and Thiago went off, with Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner coming on – the latter against his former side. But after that substitution that saw Thiago go off – Liverpool exploited the gaps and scored three goals in 10 minutes to win.
Reds fans have criticised their manager on Twitter for bringing Spain international and summer signing Thiago off – claiming that that decision handed City the win and perhaps the Premier League title.
