James Milner stepped in at left-back on Tuesday night in the Champions League win against Porto – and many Liverpool fans praised the versatile ace for his performance.

The Reds were without Andrew Robertson through suspension for the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final, but Milner came in at full-back and looked comfortable.

Jurgen Klopp’s team secured a 2-0 win at Anfield to give them a nice cushion ahead of the away leg next week.

First-half goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool the lead after a blistering start, while they weren’t quite as effective in the second period.

A selection of Liverpool fans discussed Milner’s contribution on social media and hailed his professionalism.

The Englishman is a central midfielder by trade that has mainly played there this season, but showed his quality at left-back on the European stage and did previously play that role a couple of seasons ago.

He put in some decent tackles and was positionally switched on, which meant that Liverpool didn’t miss their flying Scotsman too much.

Robertson is of course a better attacking threat and will be available for the return leg, but Milner got the credit he deserved.
