Liverpool fans praise Dejan Lovren’s contribution to 3-1 victory over Manchester City

The defender would not be in many fans’ strongest XI but he played well against the champions.

Much has been made about Manchester City’s defensive issues this season but they essentially boil down to Aymeric Laporte suffering a long-term injury.

For yesterday’s crunch clash at Anfield, Liverpool were without Joel Matip, who has firmly established himself as Virgil van Dijk’s defensive partner but dealt with it with a minimum of fuss.

Dejan Lovren’s experience was preferred to Joe Gomez’s speed and the £20 million (BBC) man repaid Jurgen Klopp’s faith with a towering performance to help keep Sergio Aguero quiet.

Lovren has had his fair share of critics since moving to Anfield, with many believing that it is pretty much impossible for a team to win the title with players of his standard at the back.

But yesterday proved that within a confident defensive structure in which he is well-protected and free to defend aggressively, Lovren can still be an asset.

He did not let his club down in the biggest match of the season so far and that earned him some very well deserved praise on Twitter from the supporters, with one proclaiming the display was his best ever in a red shirt.
