Liverpool slipped to a defeat in Spain in their European clash against Atletico Madrid – but some of the club’s supporters on Twitter did single out their defender Andy Robertson for praise following his contribution.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 away to Atletico in the first leg of a Champions League last-16 tie, as they look to regain their European crown.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in the Premier League this season and have been a force domestically, but were beaten for a second time in their European campaign.

Saul Niguez poked in from a fourth-minute corner to give Atletico a slender advantage for the second leg at Anfield, which takes places on 11 March.

The Merseyside giants weren’t able to break down a stubborn defence standing in their way, but know they have the quality and the history to suggest they can overturn the scoreline in their own backyard.

A selection of Liverpool supporters on social media felt that Robertson was a quality performer despite some individuals not reaching their usual dizzy heights.

The 25-year-old left-back was tirelessly making forward runs down the flank to offer an attacking output and put some decent balls into the box, while defensively he was solid and made one remarkable last-ditch interception that may have prevented a second Atletico goal.
