Liverpool’s trip to Arsenal last season produced a six-goal thriller, and just like Saturday’s, a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.
That day, Jurgen Klopp’s central defensive duo was Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren, which may have had something to do with the Reds leaking three goals.
On Saturday, Virgil van Dijk marshalled the visiting backline and the improved defensive solidity that has been in evidence throughout the season was once more on show.
But the Dutchman could also have had an impact at the other end as well. Only Alexandre Lacazette had more shots in the match than van Dijk’s three and he should have found the net with at least one.
Despite those missed opportunities which eventually cost Liverpool all three points when the aforementioned Lacazette clinched a late equaliser for the hosts, the Reds faithful had nothing but love for their towering defender at the full-time whistle.
They know the scale of the impact he has had on their defence and they can forgive the odd splattering of profligacy in front of goal for as long as he is tightening up the backline.
We’ve looked at the best of the reaction from the fans…
