Liverpool fans impressed with Fabinho’s performance despite away defeat to Napoli

Liverpool got their defence of the Champions League off to the worst possible start, slipping to a 2-0 defeat away from home against Napoli.

A penalty from Dries Mertens, won by Jose Callejon and confirmed by a VAR check, and a late goal from Fernando Llorente after a Virgil van Dijk mistakes earned the points for the hosts.

It was a night on which Liverpool’s midfield lacked a degree of invention and the forwards didn’t quite click into gear and that cost Jurgen Klopp’s side against a team who are strong on their own patch.

But the performance of Fabinho in front of the defence caught the eye of the Reds supporters even in defeat, with many of the fans taking to Twitter to praise his display.

Liverpool lost away against Napoli during last season’s group stage, and of course that campaign ended with a sixth Champions League lifted in Madrid, so there’s no need to panic.

£100,000-a-week (Spotrac) Fabinho was probably the biggest positive for Liverpool and while Klopp perhaps needs to tinker with the balance of his more creative midfielders ahead of him, the Brazilian is as accomplished a holding midfielder as can be found in world football right now.
