Liverpool fans hail van Dijk’s man of the match performance in dramatic late win

At this stage of the season for Liverpool, it’s all about getting the result to keep the pressure on Manchester City in the title race – the performance is immaterial.

And for long periods throughout yesterday’s clash with Tottenham, Jurgen Klopp’s side were not on top form and on another afternoon, Mauricio Pochettino’s men may have taken all three points.

Roberto Firmino’s opening goal was cancelled out by Lucas Moura’s second-half leveller and at that stage, Tottenham were in the ascendancy, with the Reds increasingly susceptible to the counter attack as they pushed forward in pursuit of a winner.

And their moment came with just minutes remaining; Moussa Sissoko was played in by Hueng-min Son and Virgil van Dijk was the only Reds defender back.

But van Dijk held his position, forcing Sissoko to blaze over the bar on his weaker foot, instead of being able to play in the South Korean for a simple finish.

When Toby Alderweireld put through his own net to win the match for Liverpool, van Dijk’s contribution was not forgotten by their fans on Twitter, who voted him as their man of the match.
