Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night by Atletico Madrid – but some of the club’s supporters on Twitter did find some positivity from the display of their midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Reds suffered a 4-2 aggregate defeat over the two legs against Atletico and they have seen their attempts to regain the European trophy ended.

Wijnaldum sent the contest to extra-time with his first-half header at Anfield, with the two teams locked together after 180 minutes of action.

Jurgen Klopp’s side then took the lead through Roberto Firmino in extra-time, but Atletico responded with three goals to secure a 3-2 victory on the night and ultimately progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.

A selection of Liverpool supporters on social media believe that Wijnaldum was a colossus in the centre of the park for them despite ending up on the losing side.

The 29-year-old scored an excellent goal with his header into the ground to give his team a real chance and he broke forward from midfield on so many occasions.

With Atletico camped inside their own half for the majority of the contest, the Reds were on top of possession with plenty of chances and he looked one of their most creative threats.

The Dutch central midfielder was substituted off at half-time during extra-time after running himself into the ground, as he proved he can deliver on the big stage and was unlucky to end up in defeat.
