Liverpool fans hail Alisson after late save ensures Champions League progress

Liverpool were riding the crest of a wave going into last night’s crunch Champions League clash against Napoli, having gone top of the Premier League at the weekend.

But that feelgood factor would have been punctured by slipping out of a competition with which the Reds have such a historical affinity before the knockout rounds.

The Anfield crowd recognised the importance of their contribution and their players responded; Mo Salah decided the match with another mercurial strike and Jurgen Klopp’s side really should have put the match beyond their opponents given the amount of chances they wasted.

However, they largely came in the later stages of the game, on a night when even making it 2-0 would not have made much difference; one goal would still have sent Napoli through.

As poor as Napoli were, sides in their situation tend to get one chance and it fell to Arkadiusz Milik in stoppage time.

The ball dropped to the Polish hitman from close range but Alisson, who had been largely untested all night, produced a crucial save to clinch the win for his side.
