Liverpool fans frustrated by lack of squad depth as Andy Lonergan is called up for USA tour

Andy Lonergan will provide cover in the goalkeeper department during the USA tour.

Liverpool have announced that Andy Lonergan will be joining the squad for the pre-season tour to the United States. Lonergan will join two other goalkeepers when Liverpool travel to America this week.

The 35-year-old veteran joins to ease the injury problems at Liverpool at the moment. There is a lack of squad depth, which is concerning Liverpool fans, ahead of the new season.

Alisson Becker has still not returned from his extended break after winning the Copa America with Brazil. And Kamil Grabara has recently joined Huddersfield Town on a season-long loan deal.

Liverpool would have called up one of their two young stoppers. But Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher and Czech stopper Vitezslav Jaros are both injured so they will miss the pre-season tour to the US.

With only Simon Mignolet and Daniel Atherton fit and available to travel, Liverpool have decided to take Lonergan. The ex-Wolves, Leeds and Middlesbrough goalkeeper will ease the workload on Mignolet and Atherton.

But Lonergan’s inclusion is yet another sign of Liverpool’s threadbare squad. Here are some tweets from Liverpool fans expressing frustration and concern after this Lonergan announcement.
