Liverpool fans dismayed as club confirm Virgil van Dijk needs surgery

Liverpool fans have been rocked by the news that Virgil van Dijk will need surgery on his knee.

The Dutch defender was forced from the action against Everton yesterday, after a strong challenge from Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The 29-year-old lasted just 11 minutes before being replaced by Joe Gomez, and there is understandable anger from Liverpool supporters about the nature of Pickford’s challenge.

Those fans have been hoping for a miracle, but it appears their worst fears have been confirmed.

An official statement reads: “Liverpool FC can confirm Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton.

“The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.”

The Reds add that no timescale will be placed on the defender’s return, but it is widely accepted he’ll be out for many months.

The development is a major blow for Liverpool and their hopes of retaining the Premier League title, with van Dijk having totally transformed Jurgen Klopp’s defence since his arrival in January 2018.

He has brought both quality and leadership, and has been absolutely instrumental in Liverpool’s return to winning silverware in the past couple of years.

Many Reds supporters on social media were absolutely gutted to learn van Dijk will require surgery:
