Liverpool fans discuss Wolves star Ruben Neves, as £35m fee reportedly emerges

The Athletic have reported on Tuesday that Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to cash in on star midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, if a fee of £35million is received by the Midlands club – and Liverpool fans have sprung into life on social media, ordering their club to sign Neves.

Neves, like the rest of the Wolves side, has struggled to reproduce his best form at the club. The 24-year-old still managed to score five goals from the base of the Wolves midfield, but with Raul Jimenez sidelined and Nuno Espirito Santo leaving, Wolves have stumbled across the line.

It feels like a big summer for Wolves. Things might have gone slightly stale following the heights of promotion to the Premier League – and then the Europa League quarter-finals. They need to organise a swift transition this summer, starting with a new manager – and some new faces in the team.

But to bring players in, some will have to be sold to make room and The Athletic have claimed that Wolves will be open to the sale of Portugal international Neves for £35million this summer. The potential end of an era for Neves, who has clocked up a huge 176 outings in four years at Wolves.

So, what next? A whole host of Premier League clubs are likely to be taking a look at the ex-Porto ball-player – who became renowned for his long-range shooting ability, especially in the Championship. Liverpool, for one, have been linked in the past – with reports saying the Reds could pay £50million.

Now, they can sign him for what seems to be a cut-price fee. Liverpool will certainly be desperate to add numbers in their midfield this summer, with Gini Wijnaldum confirming that he will be leaving the club at the end of his contract in June – with Bayern Munich said to be in advanced talks.

Even if Wijnaldum stayed, Liverpool still need a midfielder. James Milner is now a veteran and will only be able to play a handful of games at this intensity, while Jordan Henderson has failed to rid himself of a slightly injury-prone reputation. Naby Keita has struggled at Anfield for a while.

Neves could fit the bill, mainly because he can play in numerous midfield areas. While he is best suited to the number four role in front of the defence, he can also play as a two in a 4-2-3-1 system – or more advanced as a box-to-box player. Neves has had a hand in 30 goals at Wolves.

That creativity and technical ability would also allow him to play even further forward. So, Liverpool could really do with Neves especially at his cut-price figure – and Reds fans have immediately taken to Twitter to discuss a potential move. Many want him signed this summer.
