Jurgen Klopp has raved about Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford in his latest press conference ahead of Monday night’s clash between the Whites and Liverpool at Elland Road – and Liverpool fans now want him signed by Klopp.
Bamford, 27, has surprised many. Coming into the Premier League season – the first time Leeds had returned to the top tier of English football since relegation in 2004 – many believed that Leeds needed to sign a new striker.
The ex-Chelsea and Crystal Palace man had scored 16 times in the second tier last season but realistically, the striker should have scored the best part of double that figure. He missed numerous chances, despite Leeds going up.
The likes of former Leeds boss David O’Leary suggested the Yorkshire club needed to sign a striker and while they splashed out a club-record fee on Rodrigo – the Spain international has been dropped back into attacking midfield.
That is because Bamford has been in excellent form. The striker has even been on the cusp of being called up to the England side by Gareth Southgate – having netted 14 goals in 31 Premier League games. He has been creative, too.
Leeds’ number nine has also laid on eight assists during the 2020-21 form. That is, then, 22 goal involvements in 31 games for Leeds – a sensational record for a player that was supposedly not good enough for Premier League football.
Klopp has recognised that. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday night’s match, Klopp was full of praise for Leeds United’s top scorer – stating that he has been delighted to see Bamford prove doubters wrong.
“Before the season I heard on talkSPORT, people saying that Leeds need a proper goalscorer, Bamford is not good enough. I’m so happy that he could prove them all wrong,” Klopp said – as per Goal. “He’s an exceptional player.
“The work-rate is outstanding and scores goals. That’s rare. They have a lot of interesting players, but Bamford, I’m really happy for him. I don’t know him, but it’s a nice career, a little bit later than others but still very impressive.”
Liverpool have Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi as options to play in the central role of what is an attacking trio. With Mo Salah and Sadio Mane either side, Diogo Jota can also play down the middle – but is better out wide.
Firmino has been compared to Bamford on numerous occasions this season, given Bamford’s ability to link the midfield and attack – but also his ability to score goals. The Brazilian has struggled once again for Liverpool.
The striker has played two less league games than Bamford this season – but his stats are far below Bamford. Scoring just six goals in 29, he has only created five. Firmino’s 11 goal involvements are half that of English ace Bamford.
Firmino has had plenty of critics this season, while Origi is expected to leave this summer. So, Liverpool could do with a striker – one that fits into the style at Anfield, that both scores goals and creates them on a regular basis.
So, Bamford – who cost Leeds £10million in the summer of 2018 (Mail) and has scored 40 goals in 103 Leeds games – has been discussed by Liverpool fans following Klopp’s comments and many think he would be a good signing.
I would take Bamford above Origi tbh
