Liverpool fans discuss Memphis Depay display as Netherlands beat Ukraine in Euro 2020 opener
While Memphis Depay did not find the back of the net himself on Sunday evening, Netherlands finally managed to beat Ukraine 3-2. In the highest-scoring match of the competition so far, Depay impressed without getting himself on the score sheet – and Liverpool fans are impressed on Twitter.
Depay, 27, is expected to be one of the biggest talking points of the summer window. Out of contract at Lyon, the 65-time Netherlands ace is attracting interest from all over Europe – mostly from Barcelona. But Liverpool have been linked with him, too. Marca say that Liverpool are keen, and have made an offer.
No wonder. Last season, wearing the captain’s armband with Lyon, Depay had a hand in a whopping 34 goals in all competitions. Scoring 22, the ex-Manchester United ace also laid on 12 assists. On a free this summer, then, Depay is likely to be one of the most in-demand players on the market.
What did Liverpool fans say about Depay?
While he did not score on Sunday, he was central to everything. Netherlands took a two-goal lead – only to be pegged back by Ukraine. But with five minutes left to play, Denzel Dumfries scored the winner. Depay lasted the entire 90 minutes and was unlucky not to find the net.
His performance caught the attention of numerous Liverpool fans on Twitter. With Gini Wijnaldum opening the scoring, it was his teammate Depay who was the focus of Reds fans – many urging him to join.
