Liverpool suffered a blow to their pursuit of a second successive Premier League title after losing 1-0 to Southampton on the south coast thanks to an early Danny Ings strike – and fans have questioned the usage of one player.
The Reds came into the match in a tricky run of form. Jurgen Klopp’s men had drawn three of their last six Premier League games and allowed the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur to catch them.
They did keep a clean sheet against Newcastle last time out but drew 0-0 – using Nat Phillips at centre-back alongside Fabinho. But on Monday night, Klopp decided to combine captain Jordan Henderson with Fabinho.
Henderson, who earns £140,000 a week at Liverpool (Spotrac), has been used on occasion in defence – with Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez all on the sidelines through injury. But Southampton scored early.
Of all players, it was ex-Liverpool striker and England ace Danny Ings that netted. A free-kick from James Ward-Prowse was flicked beautifully into the back of the net by Ings, looping an effort over goalkeeper Alisson.
The scoreline remained the same throughout and many Reds fans reacted to their second Premier League defeat of the season by questioning Klopp’s decision to play Henderson in defence – rather than in midfield.
