Liverpool fans criticise James Milner after Barcelona defeat

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 by Barcelona in the first leg of a Champions League semi-final – and some of the club’ supporters on Twitter ripped into James Milner for his performance.

The Reds now have a huge defect to overturn in the second leg at Anfield, after the Spanish giants scored there unanswered goals at the Camp Nou.

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi (two) netted for Barcelona, who were on the night just more clinical in front of goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side showed just why they are in the Premier League title race with an eye-catching display in Spain, but ultimately their finishing let them down.

A selection of Liverpool fans singled out Milner for criticism following his individual display, which may have been slightly harsh given the shift he put in.

But the 33-year-old did miss a brilliant opportunity to score when he hit his shot straight at goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Steven.

Meanwhile, attackers Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were also guilty of spurning big opportunity to score what would have been a vital away goal.

English central midfielder Milner always gives 100 per cent effort for the Merseyside giants, but just came up short on the big European stage.
